Terry Riley: 60 years since the shocking premiere of "In C," which changed the world's music map
A live recording of a dedication performance held on a full moon night to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Kiyomizu-dera Temple's founding!
Terry Riley, a great master of the music world, continues to create new and original music, past, present, and future. Riley himself said that "the song that symbolizes me" and "In C" (1964), which continues to shine as a monumental piece of minimal music, celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
This project was realized as a celebration of the song's 60th birthday, which was the strong wish of Riley himself. On the day, "In C" was performed with about 50 musicians.
"In C" continues to be performed in various forms around the world, but in fact, Riley decided to "retire from performing this piece" after a wonderful concert held at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2009. Since then, he has turned down all offers from around the world. In other words, this is the first time in 15 years that the composer himself has participated, making this an extremely rare opportunity both globally and historically.
The time was July 21st, a full moon night. The setting was Kyoto's Otowayama Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a registered World Heritage Site. A dedication performance was held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the birth of "In C," a song said to symbolize freedom and harmony due to its unique musical style. As soon as the performance ended, a full moon rose above Kiyomizu-dera Temple. It was a historic celebration, with gratitude to the gods, Buddhas, Mother Nature, and even the universe for the fact that "In C" has been loved all over the world for 60 years.
