70's Canadian hard rock that combines the genealogy of British rock with US hard rock! THE BLUE MAX, a hard rock trio formed by three teenagers in Nova Scotia, the easternmost province of Canada, recorded their only album in 1976, a rare promo disc, and is now available on CD!
BLUE MAX was formed in 1973 by George Douglas (drums), Andrew Douglas (bass/vocals), and Robert Graves (guitar/lead vocals), all from Amherst, Nova Scotia, the easternmost part of Canada. At the time of their formation, they were a precocious band, with all three in their early teens. Their high-pitched vocals, solid guitar with fuzz, rolling bass and tight drumming made them seem to inherit the lineage of British rock such as Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull, but they also incorporated sounds similar to loud, garage-proto-metal US hard rock bands such as Blue Cheer and Sir Lord Baltimore, making them known in the local area, especially among local teenagers, as a band that played vintage hard rock unique to the mid-70s.
The band, which had been playing original songs live since the band's formation, felt the need for an album of their own songs, and finally recorded it in the winter of 1976. Only 1,000 copies were pressed for promotional purposes, resulting in this album, "Limited Edition." Starting with the opening "Sweet Lovin'" (M1), which starts with a dry guitar riff and then piles on high-pitched vocals, the album is packed with the flavor of 70's hard rock, including the solid number "Life Long" (M3), which pushes the whole song with only an A-melody and an edgy guitar solo, the epic "March of The Trolls" (M5), which shows a progressive development that mixes mid-tempo groovy rock with odd time signatures, the epic "The New One" (M6), which shows a sudden development from an acoustic arpeggio guitar to a surging bass line and tight drums, and the ZEP-inspired "The Hooker" (M8), which features drum breaks woven throughout the groovy guitar riff. The album was highly praised in the local area, and the band continued to perform live in the local area, but they were unable to secure a contract with a record company and disbanded in 1980, swept away by the flow of the times. This album has long existed as an extremely rare record known only to a select few, but it gained new acclaim when it was reissued on CD and LP in the 2000s.
