Led by Bill Lee—the bassist known for composing the masterpiece "Coltrane" and father of film director Spike Lee—this family band's only release for the prestigious Strata-East label is a pinnacle of spiritual jazz! A brilliant, jewel-like masterpiece that conveys the depth and greatness of 70s spiritual jazz!

"A Spirit Speaks" is the only album left behind by the Descendants of Mike and Phoebe, a family band composed of Bill Lee—known as the father of film director Spike Lee, who helmed "Crooklyn" and "Do The Right Thing"—and his siblings. The legendary track "Coltrane," also famous for Clifford Jordan’s iconic performance, captures a miraculous balance between a dignified, beautiful piano tone and a rich, heavy waltz beat. On "Chick Chick," thought to be dedicated to Chick Corea, the band showcases an uptempo, exhilarating performance. From there, through to the final track "Too Little, Too Late," the album is filled with beautiful, moving songs. A masterpiece that conveys the true depth and greatness of 70s spiritual jazz!
