The Dirty Three, Australia's world-renowned instrumental band of all time, have released their first album in 12 years, "Love Changes Everything." The time has come to enjoy the sound again.
Trembling with the solitary dirty music
They flew in, got together and started playing for their first album in over a decade since 2012's Toward the Low Sun. End of story. What else is there to say or do? Music is their language, their true love. They never stop listening to it. And now, Love Changes Everything.
Rising from the waves and primal mist is the aptly named single "Love Changes Everything I." A six-handed homage to the wild, troubled indie world the Dirty Three were born in, "Love Changes Everything I" kicks off the new record in a raging storm. As the sun glints off the razor blades of Warren Ellis' viola and rides the din of Mick Turner's guitar and Jim White's drums, they tumultuously evolve from fish to filth. Elsewhere on Love Changes Everything, vigilance and patience allow themselves to be caught in a loop, becoming ambient, transcending and then returning again.
The Dirty Three (Warren Ellis, Mick Turner, Jim White) formed in Melbourne in 1992, playing guitar, drums, and violin or viola. Within a few years, they had branched out from Australia to the world. Over the next decade, they toured the globe relentlessly, releasing seven albums in between and many fruitful collaborations with individually respected talents (Nick Cave, Cat Power, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, PJ Harvey, etc.). Over the last two decades, they have come together several times to renew vows, rev up their engines, play shows, and write albums. Love Changes Everything bubbles up with the clarity of freshly brewed water, which gives way to a torrent of distortion, dirty guitars, smeared violins, and drums that sometimes pound beyond the microphone's capacity.
These forms were born to weather as they are today. Time doesn't matter. They make it sing like something new every time with the wisdom they've gathered over time. It renews. "Love Changes Everything."
