DarWin “Distorted Mirror” CD
The evolution of rock continues. With a mastery of progressive and melodic sound, the super heavy technical project DarWin begins a new chapter!
Launched in 2018 by songwriter and guitarist DW, this project has attracted a global following of talented musicians. The lineup includes Simon Phillips (drums, who has worked with Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, and Toto), Mohini Dey (bass, who has worked with B'z and Willow Smith), Greg Howe (guitar, who has worked with Michael Jackson), Derek Sherinian (keyboards, who has worked with Dream Theater), and Matt Bissonette (vocals). Distorted Mirror marks the fifth album from this group, which has essentially functioned as a "band."
This hyper-technical progressive fusion album, exemplified by lead tracks "Man vs Machine" and "33rd Century Man," combines heavy metallic sounds with a sci-fi worldview. The thrilling development, featuring virtuoso playing that demands attention for even a moment, endlessly expands the listener's imagination. Rather than relying on technique, the rhythm section's earth-shaking groove and beats, along with the deep bass, sway the body. Another defining feature of this album is the enhanced emotion of the songwriting, which combines singable melodies and hooks, and runs throughout the album. From the lyricism and striking phrasing of "Rising Distortion," which opens the door to a new world, to the pop-like "Cry A River," and the seven-and-a-half-minute "Winter Fare," which represents the evolution of fusion in the 21st century, the album captivates the listener like an epic poem.
The futuristic artwork hints at the next step following their previous album, "First Steps On The Sun" (2024), demonstrating that DarWin's very existence is a grand concept and a creative journey. Following their previous album, this one was recorded at Powerplay Studios in Maule, Switzerland. Produced by DW and Simon Phillips, it brings their vision to life. "Man vs Machine" was released on YouTube in June 2025 and racked up 450,000 views in the first two weeks, demonstrating the extraordinary interest in the new release. The second lead track, "Loophole," featuring vocal collaborations by Matt Bissonette and Andrew Freeman (Lynch Mob, Last in Line), also performed well, but listening to the entire album will reveal a new world through a "distorted mirror."
