Gilles Peterson also gave this super album a stamp of approval, calling it "one of the top five masterpieces in Sun Ra's history." A heavenly live performance from New York in 1972, blissful in one song, 51 minutes long.
This is one of the best recordings of Sun Ra unearthed in recent years! It was recorded live in July 1972 at the jazz club Slug's Saloon in New York under the name Solar Arkestra, and remained unreleased for a long time. This recording was first released digitally in 2015, and fans were thrilled by its greatness. Art Yard, a British label that has been actively involved in officially reissuing Sun Ra's music for a long time, released it on analog at the end of 2016. It has now officially joined the Sun Ra discography. Now, we would like to share the joy of releasing it on CD only here in Japan with Ra on Saturn!
June Tyson's vocals are featured here in the gorgeous 17-piece orchestra, which is made up of familiar members such as Marshall Allen (as), John Gilmore (ts), and Danny Ray Thompson (bs). June's voice, which dances freely over the comfortable backing that is repeated in a relaxed swinging manner for over 50 minutes, and Sun Ra's high-pitched agitation evoke the vast and deep universe with twinkling stars. Gilles Peterson praised this beautiful masterpiece that records "Sun Ra without difficulty" as "one of the best songs/albums I have heard of Sun Ra's work," and chose it as one of "Sun Ra's TOP 5 albums" along with "Space Is The Place" and "Lanquidity." It's no wonder. Listen and you'll understand!
