The psychedelic pop band that emerged from Singapore in the turbulent early 1970s has finally arrived in Japan for the first time! This hidden gem, born from the atavistic inheritance of pop heritage that stretches back to The Beatles, Badfinger, The Hollies, and The Zombies, is now revealed!
As a former British colony, Singapore was a major cultural influx. A guitar band boom occurred in the 1960s, and October Cherries emerged from this. In addition to their success at home, they were one of the first bands to expand into the UK and the Netherlands. However, they suffered major setbacks due to illegal copying of their music and long hair laws, so they decided to start over. They relocated to Belgium and performed under the name TRUCK. Jay Shotham (vocals, bass), Peter Dias (guitar), and Richard Karn (drums) released the album Surprise, Surprise (1974), which primarily featured remakes of songs from their October Cherries days. Released on the band's own label, Baar Records, the album was a chart hit in Malaysia, a neighboring country with a larger music market, and also gained popularity among Malay communities in European countries. Based on a sound that draws on the "Pop Yeah Yeah" trend that was popular in Malaysia in the 1960s, the album approaches psychedelic with layers of guitar and synthesizers. "Surprise, Surprise" adds a rock feel, and "Broken Chair" uses synth-simulated strings, incorporating contemporary sound creation unique to the 1970s.
They then headed to England to record One Fine Day (1976) under the name COL TRUCK. In addition to a number of new original songs, the album included self-covers such as "One Fine Day," "Lay Down Your Love," and "This Is a Love Song." Mixed at the legendary Abbey Road Studios and mastered at Pye Studios, the album absorbed the spirit of Britain, the "home" of rock and pop. Even the same songs are arranged in more basic ways, revealing their core.
The members returned to Singapore and resumed activities as October Cherries. Jay Shotham passed away in 2019, but their music, including their signature song "Far Away Now," continues to be heard around the world today. After half a century, two albums from their time of taking on the world stage are finally being released in Japan for the first time.
