The Innocence Mission "Sun on the Square" CD
Karen Peris's miraculous singing voice, which modestly soaks into your heart, and her endlessly gentle and warm sound create magical music... A new collection of works by the Innocence Mission, a trio from Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Both moving and profound, what's truly remarkable about Karen Peris' lyrics is the simplicity of the words. Concrete nouns like a lightbulb or a rowboat come to life with the melody, dancing around the scale like sea creatures. Everyday objects take on enormous meaning. --Sufjan Stevens
■ Even after 29 years since her debut, Karen Peris (vocals/guitar/keyboards) has not shown any signs of fading, and continues to create masterpieces that are more subtle yet deeply moving. Karen's husband Don Peris (guitar/drums) and her friend from Catholic high school, Mike Bits (bass), work closely with her to guide her to the best possible expression. Innocence Mission, a trio from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, formed in 1985, has released a new album.
■ The album's title track, inspired by Astrud Gilberto and 60's bossa nova, is a beautiful piece of music with a tranquil and simple atmosphere. Karen's singing voice gives listeners an indescribable sense of healing, and the backing is simple yet exquisite, as if every sound is essential. This is a masterpiece filled with an unparalleled sense of euphoria, highlighting the universal from everyday scenes.
■ The cover art, by Karen Peris herself, is also wonderful.
