The peak of spiritual jazz, this is the only album recorded for the prestigious Strata-East label by a family band led by Bill Lee, the bassist known for composing the masterpiece "Coltrane" and for being the father of film director Spike Lee! A brilliantly shining masterpiece that conveys the depth and greatness of 70s spiritual jazz!

"A Spirit Speaks" is the only album ever recorded by the Descendants of Mike and Phoebe, a family band comprised of Bill Lee—known as the father of film director Spike Lee, who directed "Crooklyn" and "Do The Right Thing"—and his siblings. Bill Lee’s famous masterpiece "Coltrane," also well known for the iconic performance by Clifford Jordan, is expressed here with a miraculous balance between a dignified, beautiful piano tone and a rich, heavy waltz beat. On "Chick Chick," which appears to be dedicated to Chick Corea, they showcase an uptempo, high-speed track. From there until the final track, "Too Little, Too Late," the album continues with beautiful, tear-jerking songs—a monumental work that communicates the profundity and greatness of 70s spiritual jazz!
