Penny Goodwin's masterpiece "Portrait of a Gemini," which has captivated listeners from rare groove enthusiasts to free soul fans, is now available on colored vinyl! Packed with soulful, jazzy sounds, including a killer cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," this is a masterpiece among classics!
"Portrait of a Gemini" is a masterpiece by jazz singer Penny Goodwin, recorded for Milwaukee's Sydney Enterprises between 1973 and 1974. Due to its private label, only 2,000 copies were pressed at the time, making it an extremely rare work and a sought-after collector's item. The cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is particularly popular, with its driving, swinging intro followed by a funky, mellow arrangement that quickly evolves into a groovy groove. Featuring soulful tracks like a cover of Gil Scott-Heron's "Lady Day & John Coltrane," which is even more driving than the original, and the irresistible mellow electric piano and strings of "Today Is the First Day," backed by a stellar lineup including Richard Evans, Phil Upchurch, and Morris Jennings, this album's diverse and rich musicality, blending jazz, R&B, and gospel, has garnered acclaim thanks to MURO's introduction and strong recommendations from numerous well-known DJs. This album, featuring soulful vocals with a floor-ready R&B feel and a charming jazz sound, is a must-have for diggers and DJs alike.
