Howlin' Wolf, a wolf who lived the blues stubbornly and single-mindedly. This LP reissue of an album compiled from his 1951 and 1952 recordings for the Modern-affiliated RPM label and released in 1962 on Crown Records, also a Modern-affiliated label. The album features Willie Johnston on guitar, a rule-breaking mix of primitive delta blues and fancy jazz chords; Willie Steele on drums and unidentified musicians providing unparalleled backing; and Ike Turner on vibrant piano, Wolf barked out wild and tough blues in West Memphis. The piano was out of tune, the guitar was out of tune and the harmonica was out of key, but it was thumping and beautiful - there was no greater shock. At the beginning of his career, when he made his recording debut after the age of 40, Bruce's wolf rampage is sure to overwhelm you. His later Chicago recordings (Chess), with his partner Hubert Sumlin's guitar flying through the air, are also excellent, but there is nothing quite like the charm of this wild Memphis-era Wolf. Presented in Crown's famous 'Beauty Jacket' specification (*Note: The contents are 100% pure, rough Southern blues. Please handle with care).
