This 1998 album features sessions from the late '70s by Weldon Irvin with Don Blackman and a young Marcus Miller. This classic album is packed with mellow jazz and soul, including the killer soul track "Morning Sunrise," sampled by Jay-Z, Drake, and others, and is now available for reissue!
In the late '70s, Weldon Irvin was producing a string of rare groove classics, including "Spirit Man" (1975), released by RCA Victor, and "Sinbad" (1976), featuring the hit song "I Love You." This 1998 album is a compilation of recordings that Weldon Irvin made at the time with Don Blackman, who he worked with at the same time, and a young Marcus Miller, but which had not seen the light of day for a long time. It is truly a rare groove album! The album includes a number of songs that are in no way inferior to the classics, such as the superb mellow soul "Morning Sunrise" (A5), featuring the soft vocals of Don Blackman, who is known for being sampled by Jay-Z and Drake, the jazz-funk "The Sisters" (A1), featuring Marcus Miller's groovy bass and Tom Browne's sharp trumpet phrasing, the mellow fusion "Heard It All Before" (B5), with its sophisticated melody and urban feel, and the superb funky tune "Think I'll Stay A While" (A3), featuring the positive and powerful vocals of Toni Smith, who is also known for her role in Tom Browne's signature song and killer funk song "Funkin' for Jamaica," which is synonymous with New York funk!
