The long-awaited physical release of the digital-only live album of the 2020 live performance by Terrace Martin's band Grey Area!!! Featuring a super-passionate jazz cover of Kendrick Lamar's classic "For Free?" and a 20+ minute superb jam session with guest appearance by Kamasi Washington, this is the pinnacle of live performance in current jazz!!
Terrace Martin, who is devoted to promoting contemporary jazz through numerous projects such as R+R=Now with Robert Glasper, and Dinner Party with Kamasi Washington and 9th Wonder, formed his own band, Grey Area. To debut the band, the live album Live at the JammJam, a live performance held at the Jammcard event JammJam in 2020, is now available on CD and vinyl!!!
Grey Area is a band that brings together key figures in the jazz world, including Terrace Martin as the leader, Joshua Crumbley, a young and important bassist who has been valued for works by Kendrick Scott and Kamasi Washington and has also released his own albums as a leader, keyboardist Paul Cornish, who is also a member of the pop unit Nower, formed by Lewis Cole and Genevieve Artadi, and Ronald Bruner Jr., the older brother of Thundercat, who has lent his skills as the drummer for Prince and Kamasi.
What was the content of this live performance? After a 2-minute intro, the band suddenly exploded with "For Free?". As the song title suggests, it is a jazz cover of the masterpiece "For Free?" from Kendrick Lamar's masterpiece "To Pimp a Buttery," produced by Terrace Martin himself, and the band performed an 8-minute super-passionate performance. In between the albums, Terrace Martin performed "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," a sweet ballad that highlights keyboard solos, and "Juno" and "Stop Trippin'," which feature Terrace's ally Kamasi Washington as a guest, were both heated jam sessions that lasted nearly 20 minutes. This is a superb live album that truly packages the charm of a jazz live performance to 120%!
