The Time Is Now! (1974) is the first solo album by trombonist Phil Ranelin, who established the legendary jazz label "TRIBE" with Wendell Harrison and was an important figure in the Detroit jazz scene in the early 1970s. The album opens with the tense improvisation "The Time Is Now For Change" (M1), and then builds up the heat with the freaky and abstract "Time Is Running Out" (M2), while also providing a superb groove with the modal-sounding soul jazz "Of Times Gone By" (M3) and the strong black jazz funk "Black Destiny" (M4). From the melancholy trombone melody of "13th And Senate" (M5) to the last number of the original album, "He, The One We All Knew, Pt.1" (M6), this is a worthy spiritual jazz masterpiece! This latest reissue comes in a special 2-LP edition with a total of 9 songs, including outtakes and alternate versions!
