Roy Brooks & The Artistic Truth "Ethnic Expressions" CD

This is the ultimate live album that is called the best of the spiritual jazz scene in terms of rarity, spirituality, and groove! This is the revival of a record that emits the intense blackness of Detroit's proud drummer, Roy Brooks!

Roy Brooks, a hardened artist and drummer, was active in the 50s, starting with Horace Silver Combo in the early 60s, and participating in bands such as Stanley Turrentine, Yusef Lateef, and Charles Mingus, and was always at the forefront of the scene until his death in 2005. This talented drummer, who also participated in an album by Wenden Harrison from his hometown of Detroit and was also a member of the famous Max Roach's M'boom project, recorded a live performance in NYC in November 1973 with the group he led in the early 70s, The Artistic Truth, and this album easily surpasses the Baystate version in both quality and intensity. The participants are also a distinguished line-up of black musicians such as Reggie Workman (b), Olu Dara (tp), Joe Bonner (p), Cecil Bridgewater (tp), and Sonny Fortune (as), and Eddie Jefferson also joins in on vocals on two tracks. This is a 48-minute live documentary that is full of spiritual spirit and is full of groove, with a vividness that condenses the true awesomeness of spiritual jazz of this era!
