Sonny Stitt "When Sonny Blows Blue" CD
A super rare record recorded by Sonny Stitt for Ahmad Jamal's label has been reissued in the 2020s! This killer jazz-funk record features guest appearances by Hancock, Ron Carter, and others, and is sure to kill you instantly with its groovy cover of "Sunny"!
This is one of the rarest albums by Sonny Stitt, one of the most prolific jazz composers. This album, released on the label Jamal, run by pianist Ahmad Jamal, features amazing big-name artists such as Herbie Hancock (p, key), Ron Carter (b), Grady Tate (ds), Gene Bertoncini (g), and Bucky Pizzarelli (g), who perform high-quality performances with these incredible musicians. The four-beat version, which shows Sonny's strong blow, is great, but the highlight is the best jazz-funk number, which is appropriate for the recording period of 1970. Standards such as "Out Of This World" and "Summertime" are covered with an amazing jazz groove interpretation, and the high-speed cover of "Sunny" that lasts for over five minutes is irresistible! Grady Tate's relentless drumming gets you pumped. The funk "Opus 1" arranged by Dave Ward is also a great finish!
