THE SUPERHIGHWAY BAND "Studio City" CD

★Supervision and commentary: Kanazawa Toshikazu (Light Mellow)

The debut album by Superhighway Band, a collaborative project between Shawn Lee of Young Gun Silver Fox and trombonist Nicole Thomson, who arranges horns for YGSF's works! A fusion of jazz funk and West Coast music, this is yacht jazz!

"Did Earth, Wind & Fire make an instrumental album? Or did Seawind do funk? The CTI-style Horn All-Stars? The Brecker Brothers' treasured LA sessions? No, none of these are correct. It's actually a jazz-funk album made by Shawn Lee, the brains behind Young Gun Silver Fox, and Nicol Thomson, the trombonist in their horn section. Nicol is a top UK session man who has performed with Incognito and Brand New Heavies, but he was actually the mastermind behind TALC, a band that drew AOR fans with their two albums in the late 2000s. Their 70s-80s style urban jazz-funk is full of song, even in its instrumentals." -- Kanazawa Toshikazu

In March 2020, Nicole Thomson (Incognito, Level 42, etc.) and Shawn Lee found themselves at home with no live shows. Lee called Thomson and said, "Now is the perfect time to make a smooth jazz trombone album!" Nicole laughed, but Shawn didn't. The pandemic was the perfect opportunity to get smooth and jazzy! The two multi-instrumentalists combined their musical powers to create this masterful debut album that was the perfect vehicle for playing authentic yacht jazz!
The band's name was taken from the lyrics of the song "Home at Last" from Steely Dan's 1977 album Aja.
