Avery R. Young "Tubman" CD

★Bonus tracks will be included

A new soul star has appeared from Chicago, the birthplace of Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, and Gil Scott-Heron! A new album with a new soul scent by Avery R. Young, a poet and singer-songwriter who is the mentor of Jamila Woods! Her sincere singing voice, backed by a spiritual and funky sound with a hint of rock, will touch your heart!

"This strange and intelligent brother, attuned to some supernatural source, is a cross between Sun Ra and Donny Hathaway." Terence Hayes (poet/MacArthur Fellow)

Avery R. Young has been active in the Chicago scene for decades, spanning genres from house, blues, jazz, and rock to poet, singer, and songwriter. A composer and producer, Young infuses gospel, blues, and funk with social commentary to create a salty dish he calls sousefunk. His band, De Deacon Board, channels Gil Scott-Heron, Parliament, and Curtis Mayfield, building on the sounds of the past to chart a path of poetry and music through a troubled present. The album's title track is dedicated to Jamila Woods (featured as one of the tribe on the album's front cover) and focuses on abolitionist and feminist Harriet Tubman. Avery R. Young makes music that is unmistakably black.
